Each row is one follicle. A pink frame runs from the day light damaged it (×) until it starts growing again. Colors show the follicle’s state (growing shrinking resting after plucking stopped); the black line marks days when hair is out of the skin. Marks on top are treatments. Right of “now” is a forecast if you do nothing more. It shows two years around now and scrolls as time passes. Touch it to jump to that day.
Many values that strongly change the results, such as how much melanin is in the hair and in the skin, are estimates because no measured values were found (see “About this app” below). The numbers are a rough guide to what happens in this model, not real temperatures or real effects.
Each follicle has its own age at which pigment stem cells stop reaching the bulb; cycles that start after that age make white hair. Here you choose the average (early 52, average 62, late 72, spread ±10 years). Human data are scarce, so these are estimates.

A simulation that lines up 10 hair follicles in a cross-section of skin. Shave, pluck or flash light wherever and whenever you like, and follow over time what happens inside each follicle. Every follicle repeats “growing → shrinking → resting → growing again”, and the hair is made in the bulb (the root) and pushed up from below.
This is simplified for learning. Do not use it for medical or beauty decisions. It does not predict how well or how safely real light-based hair removal works. Hairs are straight, the skin is flat, and follicles do not affect each other. Cycle lengths differ a lot between sources (see “Values for this site”). Follicles are 1.3 mm apart (about 60 per cm², an estimate). The 1.5 cm window is the short side of the window of one example of a home light-based device on the market (1.5 × 3.0 cm, a value from sales information).
Estimated values (no measured value found): hair growth speed (0.2 mm/day on the shin, etc.), hair thickness (70 µm), bulb depth (3 mm), thickness of the epidermis and dermis, bulge depth, hair density (60 per cm²), spread of cycle lengths, time from plucking to a new growing phase (7 days on average), the length tweezers can grip (0.5 mm), days an old hair loosens before falling (4) and until it falls (0–25), days for a new bulb to grow down (10), the day the matrix starts making color (day 5–12), shrinking-phase length (14 days except the shin), and time for a light-damaged hair to fall out (1–3 weeks).
For each wavelength (600–1100 nm), it calculates how light weakens as it scatters through the skin (skin scattering; absorption by melanin, blood and water), then solves the heat equation for how heat absorbed by melanin in the hair and matrix spreads around. Whether cells are damaged depends on temperature added up over time (the Arrhenius equation with Henriques 1947 constants). The epidermis is calculated the same way.
Makers of home light-based devices often do not publish these numbers (wavelength, flash length, energy per area). Here we estimate, from sales information for one example on the market (not an official maker document), level 10 = 35 J ÷ 4.5 cm² ≈ 7.7 J/cm², wavelength 600–1100 nm and flash length 5 ms. The energy and the window width are for the same window. This does not recommend any particular product. The amount of melanin in the hair (10% for black hair) is also an estimate with no measured value found, and the results depend strongly on it. Melanin in the epidermis also varies a lot with the measuring method (about 1–43%); we picked a value in that range (2% for light skin).
Other light estimates: heat properties of tissue (heat capacity 3.8 J/cm³K, conductivity 0.0052 W/cmK), starting temperature around the follicle (35°C), starting temperature of the epidermis (22°C after cooling), the sizes of the matrix and papilla, how much color resting and shrinking hairs have, the coefficients of the light-vs-depth formula (a straight-line fit to values stated in Jacques 2010), and for unshaved hair its heat capacity (2.0 J/cm³K), burning temperature (250°C) and how much light burnt hair absorbs (90%).
