THE TUBES INSIDE YOUR BODY

Body Dive

Go in through the mouth, nose or anus and travel through the airway and digestive tract. Go in as food, and you get dissolved by stomach juice, stained by bile, dried out in the large intestine, and come out the other end.

What will you be?
Where do you go in?
How full is the stomach?

Please noteThis is a simplified simulation for learning. The numbers are rough guides, not medical advice, and cannot be used for diagnosis or treatment decisions. If you feel unwell, talk to a doctor. If someone may have swallowed something or been poisoned, don’t use this app to decide: get medical help right away.
AudienceAges 13 and up (younger children with a parent). It covers bowel movements, the anatomy of the anus, and the results of dangerous acts such as swallowing objects and drinking alcohol. Never copy the dangerous acts shown here. In the app, swallowed objects often come out, but that does not mean it is safe in real life.

Widths are roughly life-size. Lengths are shrunk a lot, mainly the small and large intestines, and time is sped up differently in each place (stomach and small intestine ×60, large intestine ×240).

About this app · main sources

The structure and workings of the tubes (digestion, absorption, reflexes, sphincters) follow textbooks and research values. The following are rough guides or for show.

  • Time spent in the stomach, small intestine and large intestine (until the pylorus opens, 2 h 30 min until the ileocecal valve opens, 12 h in the large intestine, and so on), meal size (about 700–800 mL) and how fast the stomach empties: rough guides for this app. In reality they vary a lot with the food and the person.
  • The interval of strong fasting contractions (100 minutes in this app), how fast alcohol is absorbed and how much the liver breaks down first, the blood alcohol calculation for a 60 kg person, how battery damage progresses, and how much gas fermentation makes: rough guides.
  • Deciding stool shape (Bristol type) from its water content, and how the colors of food and stool change: rough guides based on how things work (the colors include some artistic choice).
  • Tube lengths: shrunk a lot, mainly the small and large intestines (widths are roughly life-size).
  • The border between the sigmoid colon and the rectum: drawn as a narrow bend, not a sphincter. Anatomy has not found a distinct sphincter there, but measurements show it acting as a high-pressure band (the “sphincter of O’Beirne” idea is still debated). Stool usually stops here and moves into the rectum with a mass movement.
